Builders were profitable to start the year, but common themes that resulted from the largest listed companies in their recent profit reports aimed at the likely impact of rates. Although they had a minimal effect on the 2025 figures so far, some companies base a large part of their late annual strategy on rising import costs.
If the rates were not in the conversation, affordability was because buyers are constantly connecting challenges with finding houses at prices they can manage. For the most part, the largest residential construction companies that reported in recent weeks have noticed affordability that put more pressure on their bottom line, but all profit between January and March.
