Mortgage and mortgage professionals are being encouraged to take part in a major new industry-wide survey into equity, diversity and inclusion (ED&I) across the sector.
The 2026 ED&I Viewpoint, led by the Working in Mortgage (WIM) initiative and supported by industry sponsors, aims to paint a clearer picture of people’s real experiences of working in today’s marketplace.
The research will update the 2021 Association of Mortgage Brokers (AMI) study, which has helped shape much of the work and conversations around inclusion over the past five years.
WIM urges advisers, lenders and wider industry professionals to take part, stressing that broad participation is crucial to ensure the findings reflect the full diversity of the sector.
Aimie Jo Shutt, Santander national key account manager (pictured), commented: “One of the biggest opportunities we have is creating an industry where people feel safe to truly be themselves. When people can fully commit themselves to their careers, it strengthens the industry as a whole.
“Your thoughts, your feelings and your experience really matter in making this incredible industry one where everyone feels welcome, valued and accepted.”
Lucy Lewis, head of national account at Skipton Building Society (another sponsor), said:
“With stable housing coupled with upward mobility, it is important that we as an industry reflect and truly understand the diverse communities we support. “Any response to this research will help identify what is working, where barriers still exist and where change is needed.”
Aldermore head of strategic partnerships Nicola Goldie, chairman of Working in Mortgages and vice-chairman of IMLA concluded:
“When financial services truly reflect the diversity of the customers and communities they serve, the benefits are tangible: better challenges, stronger decision-making, less risk and outcomes that are not just commercial, but also responsible and in line with consumer duty.
“This research is important because it creates space for people to share honest experiences and ensures that decisions are based on lived reality, not assumptions.”
